And There Was Much Rejoicing …

Being a Mexican food lover, I was disappointed and surprised to discover that there is no cheddar cheese or sour cream in Central Portugal. But as all good little expats, we adjust to our surroundings and decide to focus on what is local instead of what is missing. Alas, enchiladas, burritos and nachos have become a distant memory. The search for green onions has ended and I have long given up trying to find crème fraîche. And marshmellows are simply out of the question (I strangely developed a major craving for Rice Krispie squares a few weeks ago).

But today was different. At first I thought it was a cruel illusion after a long day in the car with a very bored nine-year-old. Surely my eyes were playing tricks on me. Was this for real?? Could our favourite import have finally arrived?

Huzzah! We’ve hit the jackpot!

We quickly loaded every last bottle into our shopping basket and dashed for the check out. Our plan is to empty the store’s inventory for as long as the supply lasts.

Ah … summer has finally arrived.

Oooh dear. Bored nine year old in car, not good – and no red pillar boxes to count. (Mind you, it’s better than a bored nine year old AND a bored eight year old. ;-) )

That fizzy apfel juice – not Lidl’s presumably?

Every time I go into our local ‘discount’ grocery store, there’s tons of soft mexican cheeses. I figured Portugal would have ‘some’ form of sour cream or cheese close to cheddar.

I can send ya a cheesy poof though! :)

Welcome John! I did get excited when I saw a package of sliced cheddar, only to discover it was Portugal’s answer to Velveeta … *shudder*
