It’s all just garbage rubbish.
When I grew up in Alberta during the 70’s and 80’s all our waste was dumped into the trash cans in our back alley. Then the garbage men magically appeared while we slept to take it all away. Job done.
Later, ten years in British Columbia broadened my wasteful horizons and soon recycling became second nature. The City of Vancouver made it so easy and convenient so there was never an excuse for not recycling. Sorting your garbage was the hardest part and then the waste removal engineers magically appeared during union approved working hours to take it all away. Job done.
But life in the country has changed all that. While recycling is very much encouraged in Portugal, no one magically appears at Cabril to take it all away. Instead, Penfold and I faithfully sort our recycling while I fret about the best waste management systems. Every week we take our garbage for a drive in the country until we find recycling and waste bins. Garbage has now become an event.
And just to make matters under the sink even more complicated, we’ve started to compost …

Muito obrigada to Daisyfae, Stinkypaw, Sue, DaddyP, KPX, St Jude, fatboyfat, Wendy and Refugee for all the fantastic end-of-summer comments on chick<8000clicks>chick: Refresh Me!

yet another reminder of how spoiled i am with all the amenities of curbside recycling. yes, we separate our trash into two bins, and the magic happens on monday mornings…
Hmmm … we don’t have a curb either.
Yes we too have weekly collections by the rubbish fairies.. they don’t look very fairy like, but they are magic. I do have to sort out the recycling though and that is a weekly event. I do feel somewhat satisfied with myself when I’ve done it though.
There aren’t many things I miss from my urban life, what a surprise to discover that I’d miss the garbage men!
“we’ve started to compost” – one of the most worrying things I’ve ever read ……
It was worrying to write …
What a brilliant way to deal with Penfold’s socks….
(Hello, my little Poobumkins!)
Poobumkins’ socks are definitely biodegradable … x
Funny how we take these “essential services” for granted isn’t it? Good luck with the composting.
Oh dear, I hope luck has nothing to do with it!
Who is this ‘Poobumkins’ that you are all talking about…?
I expect he is very handsome…
Vanity, thy name is Poobumkins … xx
