Marmite Socks

It’s raining. I’m knitting. It’s pouring. I’m knitting.

The sky is grey and the ground is sopping wet. The Christmas decorations have come down and the holiday festivities have come to a screeching halt.  A momentous decade ended and we slipped into 2010 with a small but slushy thud.

This is winter in Central Portugal and even though I know that the season is mercifully short here, the cold and wet blanket that has covered Cabril makes it difficult to get motivated. But sales are growing (woohoo!) and so I continue to knit. And knit.

And knit.

A post-Christmas custom order rush is keeping me unusually busy and I’m grateful for each and every beige, chestnut, grey and taupe order. But I needed some colour, some vibrancy, a break from winter’s earthy tones and the grey skies.

So I made these.

People will either love them or hate them. Kind of like Marmite.

.

PS: Obrigada to daisyfae, Stinkypaw, DaddyP, surf-starved Penfold, and KPX for their comments on Ano Novo!

I am kind of stuck in knitting square and oblong things – although i have just knitted my first hat ;-) I NEED to learn how to knit socks like this! I’ve been stopping by your blog a while and I really enjoy it so thought I would say hi and anyway, the ‘you will either love them or hate them’ prompted me to say hello and tell you that I LOVE THEM… splendid :-)

Welcome Alice and thanks for saying hello, it’s always great to see a new face here! There are not enough square or oblong things in this world, keep knitting!

I love them too! i noticed them on facebook and checked them out on-line … this is from the girl who’s worn her 4 year old neice’s crazy striped socks (feet get cold easily and hey, they stretch) so that i got funky coloured socks from her for christmas – neon stripes, spots and stars … and sold as a 3 set as you’re always going to lose one sock … maybe a new marketing idea for your socks and gloves :-) keep up the knitting … it really suits you!!! Sue xx

    • Tango says:

Thanks Susan! Personally, I think there is no better way to start the day than with crazy striped socks with spots and stars – and a cup of java, of course. xx

    • Tango says:

Sew a duvet cover? Now THAT is impressive. I finally hauled my sewing machine upstairs but it has yet to make it out of the box …

Happy New Year surftwin!! Wishing you and the cute boy all the best in 2010 and more surf than is ever deemed necessary. x

Those are FANTASTIC, T. I can barely tie my shoes, never mind make socks out of knots, so I am bedazzled by people who can make something that cheery and wonderful out of what looks to me like just more cat toy.

    • Tango says:

Thanks Shannon! You see, I spent the last ten years studying accountancy day and night so that I could make socks out of knots … ;-)

Who hates these socks? No one! They are adorable! Bring on the bright funky socks (can you knit them for dogs too? Poor thing is shivering by the heater on this 2 degree morning) x

    • Tango says:

Aw thanks, Emma. Still trying to warm up here, too … and I thought I left all that cold behind in Canada!

  8. Somnambulist says:

Tango, those are terrific! (coming from a marmite fiend)…

    Happy New Year!

    • Tango says:

HNY to you and all the Clanambulists! Stay warm until the big thaw. Maybe you could rub marmite on the bottom of your shoes to keep from slipping … ?
