Preservation

I was inspired by Emma after reading her post earlier this week. So I got up from my desk, found a bucket, ventured into the 34 degree sunshine and braved the angry brambles. My arms and legs were covered in scrapes and scratches and I silently cursed Emma and her amor das amoras more than once.

Then I settled into the kitchen, rinsed my bounty and made my first ever jam.

berrylicious

Penfold’s reaction when I gave him a taste of my marvelous kitchen creation:

It’s very … solid.

PS: Obrigada to Stinkypaw, djbeat, St Jude, daisyfae, DaddyP and KPX   for their comments on Between the Lines.

    Solid?

Come on Penfold, you can do better than that ;-)

  3. stinkypaw says:

Over cooked it or what? Or is that his way of say you’re one solid jam maker?!

  4. St Jude says:

Solid is good, it works. I’m heading off into the grounds of the St Jude estate today to pick my crop… we have a lot of brambles here.

the photo made me start to drool…. and to your housemate? ummmm… preserves are NOT supposed to be liquid, or a gas, for that matter. given that there are only 3 states of matter (4, if you count plasma), then it HAS to be solid….

    • Tango says:

So sorry to induce drooling, that usually only happens if I start talking about net present value calculations. Hmmm … maybe I accidentally invented plasma jam?

  6. KPX says:

Excellent. This type of jam takes up far less room in the cupboard, AND it’s possible to cut off a slice and dilute – depending on requirements.

I don’t know whether to say ‘thanks’ or ’sorry’. There I was thinking how nice it would be to have a blokey taster on hand… now I think I’ll stick with the dog! He pleads for it with such enthusiasm, never refuses ‘um bocadinho’ then when he gets it, runs off to the garden: To bury his treasure? No, to spit it out in secret, before coming back for more. But it’s the enthusiasm that counts, penfold! (having recovered from the bramble scratches I’m now itchy from fig collecting).

    • Tango says:

Oh not to worry Emma, as soon as I tasted my first toast with jam I was singing your praises! But I do think Penfold could learn um bocadinho from your dog … ;-)

My bramble recovery is almost complete, off to pick some wild plums!
