It’s the strange little things I miss most.
I never had to give any thought or effort to having a drawer full of new socks or tea towels. Without fail, my mother would always ensure that each birthday, Easter or Christmas included a predictable supply of both. I took these small gifts for granted, never really appreciating how nice it is to have a magical, never-ending inventory.
My mother would have been 69 years old today. Of course I still miss her practical advice, her inspiring stories and her irritating optimism. But today I really miss those socks and tea towels.

Happy Birthday Tango’s mum xxx
Thanks snookylumps, I have a feeling you and Ingrid would have gotten along famously … xxx
happy birthday momma tango…
sweet memory. vague remembrance of the first time i bought my own socks. we used to crab about getting socks for christmas (and toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant in our stockings), but it was bittersweet when it ended…
It’s just not the same when you buy your own socks. And who knew tea towels could be so expensive???
69 was a sweet age… May she rest in peace.
I have a sock obsession, so if ever you want some, let me know, I’ll ship you some!
I’ve heard of strange obsessions before, but socks?? Obsessed with buying socks? Wearing socks? Darning socks?
if she could see you now : ) she’d be amazed & proud!! would likely send you a big box of both & maybe some nice curtains for those new windows. happy bd <3
I have no doubt she’d be sipping champagne on our balcony, filling the house with multi-vitamins and wine glasses … x
I’m not obsessed (at least I don’t think so) really, but I really like socks! I buy many and wear them – I enjoy cute socks!
Sounds like a mild case of sockaholism …
My mother used to buy me gloves. I was looking at the last pair the other day and wondering whether to stop wearing them so they don’t wear out………
(Not that I’m wearing them at the moment – it’s 30degs and HUMID)
I used to have a drawer full of beautiful leather gloves from my grandmother that I never wore for fear of wearing them out. When I left Canada I decided it was time to share them – of course I managed to save a sentimental few (once a hoarder always a hoarder …).
We’ve been hearing about the heatwave — keep yourselves hydrated!! x
